Task

The Mayor knows that the city prides itself in its beauty yet he also knows that it takes great pride in protecting the environment.  To make sure that the decision to add lights will not affect the sea turtles, he is sending out teams to find out about the sea turtles.  Instead of sending only people with similar backgrounds, the teams will be made of specialists that look at different aspects of the needs of the community and the turtle’s needs.  The Mayor hopes that the diiffering viewpoints will help him to see the whole picture. The Mayor will then be able to make a decision that will be good for the city and not be harmful for the turtles along with educating the public on his decision.

Your question is:

Will the Mayor’s decision to light up the night sky on the bridge harm the sea turtles in any way?

Your team will make a group presentation to the Mayor of the city in the form of a slideshow.  The presentation will show the findings of each member of the team.  In addition to the presentation, the Mayor has requested a brochure to inform the public.

Each member of the team will take on one of the positions below:

Position Purpose
Aquarist: Educating the public on the care of aquatic animals
Biologist Preserving animal species by observing and studying
Turtle Team Member Protecting the sea turtle nests and reporting strandings
Power and Light Specialist Providing light for safety and electrical needs

Each team will answer the WebQuest Question in the form of a:
1. Combined team PowerPoint presentation to show your findings
2. Combined team Publisher brochure (from template) to show your findings
The rubric will guide you in your work.
