1. Research the Internet, looking for six of the most interesting
invention stories that are sure to capture the interest of elementary school
children. The company requires that your inventions come from a variety
of categories. The categories might include food inventions, transportation
inventions, medical inventions, entertainment inventions, communication
inventions, or toy inventions. These are just a few of the many
categories you might explore. The cards must tell the story of the invention
and be visually appealing.
-
One of the best ways to find good websites is to use a search engine
like www.google.com and then type in
the words "invention of the...type in your invention."
Check the sites listed for information and visual images. If you find an
image, right click and "save image as" to a picture folder in your
folder on the server. Be sure to copy and paste the web site under the
image so that you know the source. Here is just one of the many excellent
invention websites and there are many more on the Resource page:Click here
for a great site for inventions and images.
-
Use index cards or a Word document to take notes on the invention. Put
all information in your own words. For each of your 6 inventions, you must
print and fill out a copy of the Research
Guide. This will help you be certain you have covered everything.
|
 |
2. Print the evaluation
grid and use it to rank order the six inventions you chose. Decide
as a team what criteria you will use to judge the cards. For example, one
of the criteria should be that the product is of special interest to kids
your age. This grid will help you decide which four will be the most interesting
and desirable cards to create. The four inventions that score the highest
should be the cards your team chooses to create. |
 |
3. Using the Microsoft
Word template, create an invention trading card for each of your 4
inventions with the following components: Each team member will have to
create one invention card.
Title of the invention, Inventor's name, Date of invention, Image
of the invention taken from the Internet with the accompanying documentation
of the site, and a paragraph telling the invention story. |
 |
4. Copy and paste 3 copies of the original card on the template.
This will fill the template page. Print a color copy for each member of
your team. Cut them apart with the paper cutter ( with your teacher's supervision)
and mount the cards on colored paper using rubber cement glue. I will help
you laminate them. We will trade them at recess when all teams are finished. |
 |
5. Now you must come up with a marketing campaign to promote your
trading cards. Your team must create one of the following products to advertise
your trading cards and suggest ideas for their use: Ideas for use might
include trading, games, categorizing types of inventions, researching,
timelines, etc.
-
A PowerPoint ( at least 3
slides)
-
A brochure (with at least 3 images)
-
A video-taped advertisement
Your product must include at least 2 of the 3 advertising techniques
below:
-
Free and at a value: This is like
the "buy one, get one free" or " buy now and get a deal."
-
Bandwagon: Everyone wants a set
of these trading cards...You need to "jump on the bandwagon" or "get in
the groove" now.
-
Testimonial: Famous people testifying
to how much fun these trading cards are and telling why you should buy
them.
