Dear Parents,
One of the wonderful parts of teaching is the excitement and anticipation of a new school year!  I am very happy to have your child in my class.  I have many wonderful activities planned and I am sure that we will experience a year filled with learning and fun.
                                                                     Behavior

In order to have a year that is successful, a class needs to be well behaved.  Below is a list of our classroom rules.  Please review these rules with your child.  Understanding them and their consequences is most important.

                                                               Classroom Rules

                                                     1.  Always be kind and polite.
                                                     2.  Raise your hand before talking.
                                                     3.  Follow directions.
                                                     4.  Be ready to learn.
                                                     5.  When a teacher is talking, stay in your place and listen.
A positive approach taken with young children usually results in improved behavior.  But there are situations when children will choose to act inappropriately.  They are, after all, young children learning right from wrong.  Your child's daily behavior will be communicated via the homework journal.  It will be colored daily as shown below.

Green=  good behavior or only a warning
Yellow= Second offense, loss of 10 minutes of recess
Red= third offense, loss of entire recess

* note of explanation will be sent home

The children will have many opportunites to experience positive consequences for great behavior.  Our class will have a Marble Jar.  Anytime the class receives a compliment, three marbles go into our jar.  When the jar is full, the class receives a special treat.  In the classroom, the children can earn "money" to be spent in the classroom store.

                                                               Homework
Your child will have homework to complete Monday through Thursday.  The assignments should not take more than fifteen minutes to complete.  It will be sent home in a folder.  In that folder you will find your child's assignments and any correspondence from school.  Please be sure to remove the papers from the "Keep" side daily.  These are to remain at home.  As you review your child's classwork and homework, please don't expect perfection.  Making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process.  Praise your child for their effort when appropriate and encourage them as much as possible.
I look forward to sharing your child with you these upcoming months.  Please feel free to call me at school (849-2806) or at home (881-5526)  anytime.  Communication between school and home is an integral part of every child's education.  Thank you for your cooperation.

                                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                                      Cathy Rooney
