SPRING FESTIVAL

At James B. Edwards elementary, everyone looks forward to our annual May Day Festival. It is the only time of the year that the entire student body is together at one time, along with parents, teachers, and community leaders! Nearly 2000 people gather on our beautiful front lawn as students present a thematic production that has been pursued for several months across the curriculum. The theme varies from year to year as a topic is selected that will guide the students on an academic adventure. The students utilize their creative writing skills to develop the skit from class to class. Songs, dances, scenery, and field routines are added to enhance the theme with a major emphasis on moral development. Instruction takes place in the weekly music and art classes so that classroom instruction is not weakened. However, each teacher elaborates on the theme as the curriculum allows.

The festival reaches a dramatic ending as every 5th grade student performs in the May Pole dance. Five or six May Poles are woven at one time to classical music. The students really look forward to their 5th grade year when they will have their chance. This event is a favorite in our community and often gets television coverage. Parent volunteers work many hours to assist in the extra preparations. We have a great team at JBE!
