I.
Organization
The James B. Edwards PTA is
an
organization of parents and teachers which operates under the auspices
of
the State and National PTA and is governed according to by-laws.
The
PTA
Board consists of officers and committee chairs. A nominating
committee is responsible for securing candidates for the position of
President, vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding
Secretary, and Treasurer for
the following year. Other nominations are taken before officers are
elected
at a regular PTA meeting.
The President serves for
one year.
The rest of the committee chairs and co-chairs are chosen by the
incoming
President.
II.
Mission
Raising funds for
basic requirements not otherwise provided, as well as amenities, is one
way in which
James B. Edwards Elementary PTA seeks to support the school. Some of
the
items that PTA provides are:
- Quarter-mile track
around
our playground for running, jogging and walking
- Art supplies for art
instruction for grades kindergarten thru 5th grade
- Phonics and math
workbooks
for 1st, 2nd & 3rd grades
- Reading instruction
materials for special education classes
- Laminating film
- Copy machine supplies
III.
Committees
PTA Committees
provide the structure for much of the work performed by PTA. PTA
Committees include:
- Ways & Means -
organizes
fund raising for PTA. The biggest fundraiser has been our gift wrap
sale
which nets approximately $20,000 each year.
- Beautification -
upkeep of
landscaped beds
- Butterfly Garden -
upkeep
of a special outdoor study area containing plants necessary to support
the
life cycle of indigenous butterfly species
- Community Outreach -
career
awareness, philanthropy, character education
- Corporate Promotional
- coordinates various programs offered in support of local education.
For example, some grocery stores donate a percentage of designated
receipts to area schools. This committee is responsible for
disseminating information on how families can participate in this type
program.
- Cultural Arts -
coordinates
school wide participation in this district, state and National PTA
contest.
Areas include photography, visual arts, language arts and music. JBE
has
had winners at both the state and national level.
- Parent Volunteer -
coordinates school wide matching of parents to the many volunteer
opportunities throughout the school.
- Science Lab -
coordinates
staffing of Science lab on a regular schedule.
Other committees include
Children's Festival, Directory, Door Prizes, Facilities, Grant Writing,
Holiday Parade, Hospitality, Lasagna Supper, Membership, Newsletter,
Publicity, and Run for
Excellence, and Staff Appreciation.
