Mrs. Schapiro's Web Page

Thanks for visiting my JBE web page. This is my second year at JBE and I love it! The children are so creative and everyone is so supportive. We are doing a lot of great things in the art room. In Kindergarten students work either in centers or on a whole class project as they practice their art skills. First grade is introduced to more art skills, procedures, and  vocabulary through whole group projects. In second through fifth grade the children often get the opportunity to work on art projects in the studio center  of their choice. Each class session begins with an introduction and short lesson about an artist, art technique, art project or other art concept. Then the children are free to go to an art studio of their choice to further explore ideas they have in art. The studio centers include painting, drawing, clay, 3D sculpture, printing, art book research, collage, and fiber. The children are held accountable for their art through student logs and artist statements. At least once a quarter students must select a piece to showcase in the hallway and write about that art piece. From time to time these older students are also required to participate in a whole class lesson.

Second through fifth graders also may participate in an on line web page called Artsonia (www.artsonia.com )where they can view their artwork as well as the work of others at JBE. Further information is available about both these programs in the art room.

I have been teaching art for 8 years. Previously  I taught kindergarten and first grade at Ashley River Creative Arts School. I have a BS in Elementary Education, And MS in Museum Studies and am Nationally Board certified in Early Childhood. I enjoy art, reading, traveling, cooking and sock monkeys. I have two teen age children and no pets.
