For Rising 6^th Graders

SUMMER 2006

SIXTH GRADE READING REQUIREMENTS 
 

Dear Rising Sixth Graders and Parents: 

Your task over the summer is to read, hopefully for enjoyment.  As your future language arts teachers, we are asking that you read 2 to 3 books from your choice of appropriate middle school, parent-approved books.  (Should you need further suggestions, you may visit the MMS website at http://moultrie.ccsdschools.com for suggested readings.)  You will write your first literature response in class on the first Friday of school.  Please come to the school that day prepared to explain elements of plot, characters, characterization, and the genre of your chosen book(s).  Any other reading requirements for the school year will be explained in detail by your assigned language arts teacher during the first week of school. 

Our goals for this reading requirement and the responses are to give your child an opportunity to demonstrate the *following: 

• The ability to read a variety of texts fluently
• The ability to read independently for extended periods of time to derive pleasure and to gain information
• The ability to summarize, paraphrase, analyze, and evaluate what she/he reads
• The ability to make predictions about stories and to make inferences and draw conclusions
• The ability to describe and analyze an author’s use of different characterizations, plot, foreshadowing, point of view, and tone
• The ability to identify the characteristics of genres
• The ability to write multiple paragraph compositions and friendly letters and to use writing to inform and explain
• The ability to write legibly and to respond to texts both orally and in writing
